Mystery Social!

7/9/2018

Happy Monday! We had an action packed weekend at Camp Arrowhead! On Saturday morning, we said goodbye to all of our one week campers while the two week campers went about their days as usual. Then, during lunch, everyone received an unexpected surprise! A team of ninjas from Camp Ninja in Maryland (a notorious ninja haven) stole all of our silverware and replaced it with chopsticks! Spaghetti was served for lunch, so eating with chopsticks was quite tricky. After lunch, the campers engaged in a quest to win our silverware back! Each group traveled around camp to complete certain tasks such as underwater table setting and (paper) ninja star making. When each group finished a task, the ninjas would return a piece of cutlery. The campers were finally able to complete all the tasks and we got our silverware back just in time for dinner!

After dinner, we had a Saturday night at the movies! Everyone headed to the lounge to eat popcorn and watch Karate Kid (the original, of course). There were a lot of laughs as the children followed the adventures of Daniel and Mr. Miyagi and many cheers when Daniel finally defeats Johnny with his famous Crane kick.

Sunday started out with breakfast followed by an Eucharist service. Father Chuck Weiss from Christ Church in Dover served as the visiting Rector and taught campers about Jesus’ golden rule: treat others how you want to be treated.

In the afternoon, our mini campers arrived! We all ate dinner together and then the mini campers headed out to roast marshmallows with their units while the two weekers went to free time!

We have some great activities planned for the upcoming days, like a safari themed social and an overnight camping trip in outpost for certain groups. We cannot wait for another fantastic week at Camp Arrowhead!

Thursday Night Cook Outs!

7/7/2018

Thursday was a very fun day at Camp Arrowhead! Every unit cooked out dinner last night and had a great time! The Homestead units hiked to outpost with their groups and cooked burgers and veggie burgers over the campfire. While most Homestead units came back to main camp after dinner, H9 and H10 pitched tents at the campsites and had a fun over night!

All the Pioneer units had a fun and tasty potluck dinner together. The theme was “finger foods,” and all the groups were responsible for cooking one dish to bring to the potluck. P1 made “death fries” which is a famous local dish comprised of french fries, melted cheese, bacon, ranch and  barbecue sauce. P2 made buffalo chicken dip while P3 made delicious teriyaki meatballs. P4 made classic sliders and P5 assembled fruit kebabs with grilled pineapple and homemade granola. P7 cooked bacon wrapped mini hot dogs and P8 contributed quesadillas. For dessert, P6 made beautiful and tasty donut holes! It is safe to say that there was something at the potluck for everyone, and all the campers and counselors left with happy tummies :)

The Sunfish Pathfinders and Adventure Pathfinders cooked out together on the beach. They cooked Cowboy Mac and five cheese fondue! The fondue was a tasty mixture of Mozzarella, Gruyere, Cheddar, Swiss and Parmesan. I got to try some at the end of the night and it was delicious!

After dinner, all the groups that did not have an overnight went to free swim and then settled in for bed after a long, fun day!

We are sad to see our one week campers leave, but we are also very excited for our mystery central to begin!

Signing off from Camp Arrowhead,

4th of July at Camp Arrowhead

7/4/2018

Second session is well under way and our campers are having a great time! Today is the 4th of July, and our day has been chock-full of festivities. We started the day with a patriotic flag raising followed by a reading of the Declaration of Independence by Camp Arrowhead’s very own “Uncle Sam.” We then had a special chapel service on the beach and sang happy birthday to America! Later today, we are going to have a bonfire on the beach to go with games, dancing and hot dogs! The beach party will wrap up as we watch the Dewey Beach fireworks light up the sky from across the bay.

While not celebrating Independence Day, campers have been participating in many fun activities! The weather has been toasty, so the buzzword of the week has been hydration and groups are spending a lot of time in the pool and out on the bay!

Day Camp 1 cooked out lunch on Tuesday over a campfire with their counselors. Everything was delicious!

Day Camp 2 played on the rope swing Tuesday afternoon and then cooled off in the pool at free swim.

H1 got to go deep sea diving on Monday and had a great time looking for bay life!

H3 built a beach bonfire on Monday evening with the waterfront staff and listened to spooky stories.

H4 went sailing Monday afternoon. The boys loved jumping in the water to cool off from the heat.

On Monday, H5 went on a bay safari with the Environmental Center directors, Morgan and Ellie. They explored the shallow parts of the bay and learned about camp’s resident horseshoe crabs and the Rehoboth Bay’s other aquatic fauna!
H6 explored camp on a nature walk Tuesday morning. They saw all sorts of wildlife and had a lot of fun learning about southern Delaware’s diverse ecosystem!

H7 went around camp Tuesday doing random acts of kindness with our Christian education staff. These girls brought smiles to everyone they encountered around camp!

H8 went banana boating Monday morning and had a great time zipping around in the water.

H9 explored the camp chicken coop on Tuesday morning and got to pet the birds.

H10 cooked out dinner with their group on Tuesday. The girls loved learning how to build a campfire for cooking.

H11 got to go tubing on Monday morning! All the boys laughed and sang the whole boat ride.

P1 celebrated the end of their first full day at camp by making fluffernutters at their unit! For those of you who do not know, a fluffernutter is a delicious sandwich comprised of peanut butter and marshmallow fluff.

P2 did yoga at the beach on Tuesday morning. Afterwards, they searched the bay for fiddler crabs to feed our turtles in the Environmental Center.

P3 spent Tuesday morning on an entertaining scavenger hunt throughout camp!

P4 learned how to quickly (but safely!) build a fire and tested their skills with a competition to see who could build a fire the fastest.

P5 hosted chapel on the beach to celebrate Independence Day. The theme of the service was a celebration of the freedoms we all enjoy here in the USA.
On Monday evening, P6 got to go on a boat ride to watch the marvelous sunset from the middle of the bay!

P7 had fun sand painting on Tuesday morning! All these young men created beautiful masterpieces to say the least :)

P8 traversed the crazy bridges on the high ropes course Tuesday morning! They then cooled off by kayaking in the bay.

The Sailing Pathfinders spent every afternoon learning how to sail sunfish in the bay! Soon they will be ready to move onto the bigger and more complex Hobie Waves and Hobie Sixteens and go out farther into the water.

The Adventure Pathfinders had a blast on their overnight Tuesday! The group hiked to outpost and spent the night camping out with their group mates. This trip prepared them well for their two night trip to Trap Pond State Park. Adventure!

Wishing you all a happy and safe Independence Day from Camp Arrowhead!!
