Camp Arrowhead seeks its next
Executive Director
Camp Arrowhead, an essential ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Delaware, is nestled in the pines on the shore of the beautiful Rehoboth Bay in Lewes, Delaware. Camp was founded in 1954 when generous friends of the Diocese purchased Camp Arrowhead, which had previously been a boys’ summer camp.
Between the 2010 and 2020 Censuses, Sussex County’s population grew 20%, which helped to make Delaware one of the fastest growing states. The low property taxes and no sales tax attract people to Delaware. Lewes was the first settlement in Delaware; The Dutch settled here in 1631. Located in Lewes,
along the Atlantic Ocean, is also Cape Henlopen State Park, originally used as a fort for the US Army during World War 2. Arrowhead is a co-ed residential summer camp serving students entering grades 2-11, a Day Camp program for local children entering grades 3-4, and a Retreat Center from mid-August to June.
All ages of campers come to camp at the same time for one-week or two-week sessions. We host 220-240 campers per session. Last Summer, 66.6% of our campers came from Delaware, 10% from Maryland, 10% from Pennsylvania 6.4% from Virginia, 2% from New Jersey, 2% from the District of Columbia, 1% from New York, .5% from North Carolina, and the rest came from Florida, California, Connecticut, Vermont, West Virginia, Texas, South Carolina, Michigan, & Missouri. Camp Arrowhead follows a decentralized camping program. Campers stay with their unit for all activities and our family style meals. Important traditions at camp include the Wednesday Night Cook Out, where all units cook and eat in their Outpost or Pioneer Unit, and our Sunday Centrals during two week sessions. Sunday Centrals are a time when everyone at Camp comes together with a centralized theme to enjoy each other’s company in a camp-wide activity such as a carnival or competition. On the final night of each camp session, everyone gathers together for a festive meal, Eucharist, and a bonfire with camp songs and skits performed by each unit.

Camp activities include daily chapel, Christian Education, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, banana boating, visits to the Craft Shop, archery, campcrafts, and environmental education. Arrowhead has a climbing wall, high ropes course, low ropes course, swimming pool, and an environmental center.
Campers are called to return to their Summer home in the pines year after year. 80 to 85% of our summer staff were campers. Our Camp Alumni Association consists of former staff members from the
1950s to the 2020s. The Camp Alumni are a devoted and dedicated group, with over 150 staff alums stepping in to help during the Summer of 2021 when not all summer staff positions were filled due to Covid. This follows in the tradition of the Staff of 1976, who banded together to keep Camp open despite financial hardships and no campers. Many of those nine staff members are and were active in camp, with their children and grandchildren also attending and working at Camp. The Alumni host a reunion at Camp every three years, as well as an annual meeting, both at Camp. The task of our next Executive Director is to put the resources of Camp Arrowhead to their fullest use — human, financial, natural setting, and facilities — in the service of our unique place within the ministry of the Episcopal Church in Delaware. With the addition of our new, beautiful, air conditioned and winterized Jane Ashford Center, the potential for camping, retreats, and hosting events continues to grow. The Jane Ashford Center was funded with a $6.5 million dollar capital campaign.
A relationship to be continued and enhanced is with the Nanticoke Indian Association, on whose ancestral hunting and fishing lands Camp is located. In the Summer of 2022, Camp Wiiyii Knaawush
Niitaap began and hosted the children of the Nanticoke peoples entering grades 2-7 at Camp Arrowhead. The mission of this special week at camp is to promote wisdom, cultural heritage, and greater awareness of We Are Still Here. Wiiyii Knaawush Niitaap means “It is good to see you, my friend.” |
In recent years, the Diocese of Delaware has been intentional in addressing issues of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Camp Arrowhead is part of those initiatives and as a ministry of the diocese we have made a strong commitment to significant targets and benchmarks in Camp’s ministry.
Over the last several years, Camp has received several grants and donations to increase our DEI numbers for campers, staff, and off season retreats. These targets include Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC), disenfranchised communities, LGBTQ+, and other special circumstances. In the summer of 2022, our diversity numbers for campers reached 10.8%. Our staff diversity number reached 23%. Camp was also an “early adapter” in the welcoming and inclusion of members of the LGBT+ community.
In 2022, there were 18 (19%) staff
members identified as LGBTQ+. In addition, Camp has a long history of hiring Camp America participants from other countries. In 2022, our staff included 7 Camp America participants representing five countries. One other area our grant funding is focused on is our off season retreat usage by BIPOC participants of nonprofits, schools, and churches. Several relationships and partnerships have been established, however, more work is needed in this area. We seek to continue to build on this strong foundation and are very committed to the ongoing work of DEI. We are seeking an Executive Director who can network and share the good work of camp within the Diocese, the state, the Episcopal Camping World, the
American Camping Association, and the greater community. Our next Executive Director will have an understanding of the essential ministry of summer camping, a vision for increasing offseason use of camp, and will be willing to get involved in all aspects of Camp Arrowhead. |
