A Tribute to Delma Batson

by Bettylee Carmine

In nineteen hundred seventy two,
Delma Batson joined our crew,
A workin’ in the kitchen.

For thirty one,
She’s cooked a ton,
A workin’ in the kitchen.

Many helpers have come and gone,
There’s Edwardo, Matt, Lad and
John,
A workin’ in the kitchen.
Her Delma chicken has grown to fame,
And famous desserts have brought
the same.
Times were not always bright
and easy,
There were some days she felt
quite queasy.

Such as:

Ovens on the blink
Pots in the sink.
No heat in the kitchen,
What was she to do?
Sysco late, mealtime here,
Milkman cometh sometime next year.
Coffee pot empty, no tea
in the house.
Oh my Lord, there goes a mouse
There’s a critter on the wall.
Enough is enough; I’ve seen it all.

Help me! Help me! Delma cried,
Hurry, hurry come inside.
Rid me of this terrible mess.
And forever I will you bless.

Many staff and campers have come
And gone.
And lots of clergy too!
But wonderful Delma
keeps rollin’ along
Doin’ what’s to do!
Knowing this, we must confess,
And so to end this rhyme,
We love you Del
And wish you well
Til the end of time.

Editor’s note:
Delma Batson was a recipient of the Bishop’s Award
